Considered one of the main tourist destinations of the Peruvian Amazon. In addition, the most visited by national and foreign tourists. Located in the Madre de Dios River basin, this 127-hectare water mirror is surrounded by palm trees teeming with macaws and is just half an hour from Puerto Maldonado by river. In its waters, which can be traveled in tour boats rented by local people and shelters, there is a permanent population of giant otters, which can be sighted in their morning fishing activities or grooming on logs on the shores of the lake. There is an observatory tower to get a panoramic view of the scenic lake.
The attraction features an elevated trail that provides accessibility to visitors with disabilities, as well as older adults. The Interpretation Center is on the way to the lake, next to the Sandoval Checkpoint.

An ideal stream for lovers of sport fishing in the heart of the reserve. Quebrada Palma Real is in the Sandoval sector, on the right bank of Madre de Dios River, two hours from Puerto Maldonado. Here – in addition to observing the stunning landscapes of the low jungle – it is possible to do sport fishing, where you can catch tucunarés(Cichla ocellaris),one of the most precious fish in this region.

Another of the great spots to observe Tambopata National Reserve wildlife. Its name is due to the continuous presence of sachavacas (Tapirus terrestris),one of the most representative herbivorous mammals of the Amazon, exceedingly difficult to spot. A route to know the secrets of La Torre Sector, one of the most scenic in the Tambopata basin. In these horseshoe lakes – ancient river arms formed by the constant mobility of the Amazonian channels – it is possible to observe a great variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, birds and, hopefully, large mammals such as capybaras, giant otters, jaguars, among other species. The lakes are on both banks of the La Torre River, 2 hours, and 30 minutes by boat from Puerto Maldonado.

Parrot and macaw clay licks constitute one of the most amazing natural events in the Amazon, and only occur in the jungle of Peru. Every morning – as long as the sun rises – hundreds of birds, especially large macaws, flock to these clay walls on the banks of a river to consume mineral-rich soil, which serves as a food supplement. The Chuncho Clay Lick– considered the largest in the Amazon – is in the Alto Tambopata sector and has a hideout so that visitors can enjoy this unparalleled spectacle, and without disturbing the wildlife.
