Location
District of La Punta, province of Callao, region of Callao.
System of Guano Islands, Islets and Peninsulas National Reserve (RNSIIPG) is made up of a set of 22 islands, islets, and groups of islands, and 11 peninsulas along the Peruvian coast. In the specific case of the Cavinzas islands and Palomino islets, they are made up of small islands of variable dimensions that are under the influence of the cold waters of the Humboldt current. These are located 12 miles from the port of Callao, towards the west of San Lorenzo Island.
In the Cavinzas Islands you can find species such as Humboldt penguins, Peruvian booby, Peruvian pelican, guanay, seagulls and tendrils, but also others such as the red-headed vulture and the common and black ostero, depending on the time of year. In these islands the birds find areas to rest, reproduce and feed, allowing their survival.
The Palomino islets are 4 that are home to a large population of sea lions and sea birds. Formerly, the islands were used as guano islands, but this activity ended due to the decrease in seabirds. Due to this, the sea lions settled there and, today, we can find more than 5000 species. In less quantity we can find birds such as seagulls, pelicans, penguins, etc. In recent years, its habitat has been increased thanks to the work carried out by Sernanp and authorized tour operators, who contribute to carrying out activities in compliance with good practices and standards of conduct within the PNA.
In the Cavinzas islands and Palomino islets we can see various species of birds, which make up a luxury show; however, indisputably, those who steal the attention of visitors are the colonies of sea lions and the colonies of Humboldt penguins, constituting a spectacular sight throughout the tour.
