Province of Maynas, department of Loreto.
The Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve is home to the largest concentration of white sand or varillales forests known in the Peruvian Amazon, where numerous unique species of plants and animals live. It protects a sample of the flooded forests by the waste waters of the Nanay, also unique in the Peruvian Amazon. This reserve contains an enormous and peculiar biological wealth, in which numerous species of endemic plants and animals of restricted distribution stand out, many of them still without scientific description.
Among the birds, two dozen stand out that only inhabit forests of white sand and that were unknown in Peru until just five years ago. In the last five years, four species of birds new to science associated with white sand forests, three species of anthill (Herpsilochmus gentryi, Percnostola arenarum and Myrmeciza castanea) and one flytrap (Zimmerius villarejoi) have been described; there is a fifth that is still under description (Polioptila clementsi). To these must be added another ten species of birds not known before in Peru, such as the beautiful cotinga (Xipholena punicea) and the manakin (Neopelma chrysocephalum). It is suggested to visit the José Álvarez Alonso Biological Station (EBJAA) of the IIAP, because they have established trails for trekking.
